Week 23
What's Happening:
Week twenty-three, and the work continues unabated. Inside, the final matt coat is going on, and the house is finally taking on the look it was always meant to have. The ceilings, panelled walls and carved staircase balustrade have deepened to a rich, even amber, and the big doors and glazed screens look the part now they’re finished. Tools, paint tins and boxes still sit about the floors, but the rooms are starting to look like rooms rather than a work site.
Between the October monsoon downpours, the crew is moving the work outdoors. Every dry spell counts, so the exterior varnish is going on whenever the weather allows, with the scaffolding still wrapped around the house and the carved balconies and eaves catching the first coats. Once the timber is done, the concrete walls get their paint, and then the electricians come back for the final fixes. The end is getting close.
